A Land Remembered

Tobias MacIvey

Briefly describe who the character is and their role in the novel.

Tobias MacIvey is the father of a poor family living in the wilderness of Florida. They grow to become extremely wealthy due to real estate. Tobias is 30 years old and married to Emma. They have a son named Zech. Tobias is a persistent and determined man who fights through major losses and difficulties to make a living for his family. He even befriends the Seminole Indians and ex-slaves who are attempting freedom.

What is the relationship between the character and their environment and the natural world?

Seeing as Tobias came into the Florida wilderness at a time of minimal development, he has instilled in him a sense of urgency for preservation of the land and wildlife that inhabits it. He tries his hardest to manipulate the land to benefit him and his family's needs, while still maintaining a level of respect.

Where does this character experience a strong sense of place and what legacy will/did they leave behind for others?

Tobias experiences a strong sense of place with his family and in the Florida wilderness. He plans to leave fortune and prosperity for both his family and others that move to inhabit Florida, while also maintaining the wild things that inhabit the land.

How do you relate to this character?

I relate to this character in the way that he strives for the best for others. Although he does get caught up in the work aspect of this endeavor, he always has the best intentions at heart.
